Disabled Access Consulting
Beacon Consulting are experts in consulting, management and design advice relating to disabled access. We provide comprehensive review and assessment of new and refurbishment building plans and surrounding environs for compliance with disability access regulations.
Our Access Audit service is an examination of a building, its facilities or services reported on against pre-determined criteria to assess its ease of use by people with a disability. Guidelines are from the Australian Standards AS1428 suite, Disability (Access to Premises – Buildings) Standards, Building Act and the Disability Discrimination Act.
The reasons for carrying out an Access Audit are to help meet the legislative requirements of the current legislation and standards and improve disabled access and egress and in turn increase your custom and turnover as well as help protect you from claims of disability discrimination. It is necessary to carry out an Access Audit to establish what action is needed.
For the first time in Australia, the Disability (Access to Premises - Buildings) Standards, required by the federal government sets minimum access requirements for proposed buildings which come into effect from May 1, 2011.
The new requirements cover stairs, ramps, toilets and corridors and will apply to all new office buildings, shops, hotels, B&Bs and even the common areas of certain apartment blocks.
A Beacon Consulting Access Audit report details ways in which non-compliance exists and recommend a course of action. Photographs within your report will identify areas on non-compliance. Priorities will be given to work recommended. Some items (Especially Occupational Health & Safety issues) may need to be carried out immediately whereas other items could be added to the regular maintenance program of your building. Some larger items may need to be included in a feasibility study undertaken by yourselves.
