Beacon Consulting is a 100% privately owned company delivering projects throughout Queensland and Papua New Guinea. Our current Brisbane, Cairns and Townsville offices are owned by Beacon Consulting Pty Ltd.

Greg McDonald AAIQS
Townsville, Cairns
Greg McDonald is a Director of Beacon Consulting in our Townsville Office and is also the Director responsible for the Cairns Office and selected projects in Brisbane and PNG.
As founding Director of Beacon Consulting, Greg has overseen the firms strategic growth, corporate identity and quality services output of the firm since the very beginning. Greg is focused on delivering quality services, backed by knowledge and research to our clients and continually improving our business systems to meet our goal of being recognised by clients and peers as being "best in industry".
Greg has over thirteen years quantity surveying experience having commenced his construction career in 1998 when he joined the Cairns office of the Australian based Cost Management Consultancy firm Rider Levett Bucknall. Since then he has worked throughout Australia, Asia and Europe in a quantity surveying and project management function.
Greg is the lead quantity surveyor for Beacon Consulting on the Cairns Institute ($25M), Masonic Care Townsville ($51M), Masonic Care Sandgate ($50M), Holy Spirit Care Services Cairns ($56M) and was the lead cost planner and Client representative for the A$1.48Bn Beacon South Quarter Project.

Rodney Byl BSA A1185080
Queensland Manager Building Certification
Rodney is Beacon Consulting’s state manager and has responsibility for all Building Certification services provided throughout Queensland.
His extensive experience in building code analysis and building regulation interpretation has developed from fifteen years in local and state government and three years in the private sector. Rodney is originally from Perth in WA where he was previously the Principal Building Surveyor at the City of Fremantle.
Rodney currently holds the position of Vice President of the Far North QLD Branch of the Australian Institute of Building Surveyors (AIBS) and Past President of WA Chapter. Rodney was also involved in the development of the new Building Act for Western Australia.
Rodney’s expertise includes BCA assessments for all building types, disabled access consulting, technical due diligence fire safety audits, peer review, performance based design advice, and assessment of performance based fire engineering safety reports and BCA compliance advice and legislative interpretation.

Stephen Smith MRICS, AAIQS
Associate Director Cairns
Stephen is an Associate Director in our Cairns office with responsibility for the supervision and delivery of cost management services within our Cairns office. He has specialist experience in feasibility studies, detailed and accurate cost plans, bills of quantities and cost reporting to meet the Clients needs.
Stephen has almost 20 years post qualification experience gained both in the UK and Caribbean. Stephen was a partner in a multi-disciplinary consultancy firm in Bermuda providing cost advice to Government and private clients alike on resort/leisure developments throughout the Caribbean. After returning to the UK Stephen was in charge of the Manchester office of the MDA Group (Monk Dunstone) working for prestigious clients including Marks & Spencers and the Post office. Stephen then spent 8 years as a Director of his own company working for one of the world’s largest Utilities providers (United Utilities), Manchester City Council and Gleeds.
Stephen joined Beacon Consulting in 2010 and was promoted to Cairns Office Manager in 2011. Since being with Beacon Consulting, Stephen has provided cost management services on the Cairns Institute ($25M), Masonic Care Townsville ($46M), Masonic Care Sandgate ($16M) and HSCS Bethlehem Stage 2 ($16M).
